Creating a Hearing-Friendly Holiday Celebration for Your Loved Ones

The holiday season is quickly approaching and celebrations with loved ones are being planned and added to the calendar. While typically a time for connection, joy and celebration, for those with hearing difficulties, traditional holiday gatherings can sometimes be challenging. By being mindful and inclusive, you can create a warm environment where everyone feels welcome and engaged. Here are some practical tips to ensure your holiday celebration is hearing friendly.

1. Choose a Quiet Venue

Selecting a quiet, low-key location is essential. Opt for spaces that minimize background noise, such as your home or a quiet community centre. Avoid crowded restaurants or areas where noise can be overwhelming.

2. Use Visual Aids

Incorporate visual elements, like banners or signs, with important information. Providing written menus or schedules for activities ensures that everyone can follow along, regardless of their hearing ability.

3. Limit Background Noise

Be mindful of the noise level during your celebration. Keep music at a moderate volume and turn off any distracting appliances, like the dishwasher or laundry machine, during key moments to create a more conducive atmosphere for conversation.

4. Encourage Hearing Assistance

Encourage guests who wear devices to bring them along. Let them know the party could get noisy and their hearing devices will help them participate in conversations.

5. Face Each Other When Speaking

Encourage guests to face one another during conversations. This allows for lip-reading and makes it easier to pick up on non-verbal cues, enhancing overall communication.

6. Use Clear Communication

When speaking, use clear, moderate tones and avoid mumbling. Be mindful not to talk while chewing or cover your mouth, as this can hinder communication.

7. Plan Interactive Activities

Organize games or activities that encourage group participation. These can include trivia, charades, or crafting stations—anything that fosters connection and allows everyone to engage without relying solely on auditory communication.

8. Check In with Guests

Throughout the event, take the time to check in with your guests. Ensure they are comfortable and able to participate and be ready to adjust if needed.
By implementing these tips, you can create a holiday celebration that is inclusive and memorable for everyone, regardless of their hearing abilities. This season let’s celebrate not just the joy of togetherness, but also the diversity of how we communicate. Happy Holidays!
